What is Mach3 and why do I need it?
Mach3 is basically a operating system for your CNC, kind of like windows is to a computer. Mach3 is only a Gcode reader and not to be looked at as a Gcode processor (CAM software).
Mach3 does have some wizards that will generate Gcode, but does not have design capabilities, it can not render (CAD) drawings. Its strict function is to read the Gcode and translate it into movement.
Is Mach3 like computer aided design (CAD) or computer aided machining software (CAM)?
No, if you would like to purchase CAM software we suggest Mecsoft VisualMill.
Be aware that good CAD\CAM software can cost much more than your whole milling setup. We just purchased a copy of Autocad Inventor for designing our CAD drawings, this cost us $10,600 CAD.
Will Visualmill do CAD drawings?
Yes it will, though its capabilities are limited. Visualmill is designed as CAM software and excels in this area, you will find that most design packages are either CAD or CAM rarely both. However, Visualmill will do the CAD trick for most users and will definitely do the job for the CAM end.
